Before Your Eyes: The Game You Control With a Blink — Interview

As a professional esports gamer with my own streaming channel, I‘m always on the lookout for groundbreaking indie games that catch the community‘s attention. Before Your Eyes immediately grabbed my interest this year with its unprecedented blink detection mechanic to control an emotional life story.

Eager to dig deeper, I connected with key creators Graham Parkes (Writer) and Bela Messex (Designer/Programmer) from developer GoodbyeWorld Games for a rare inside perspective on bringing this ambitious vision to life.

The Creative Visionaries Behind This Masterpiece

The founding team met while growing up together in California. Avid gamers from a young age, they bonded over classics from Sierra and LucasArts. GoodbyeWorld Games CEO Will Hellwarth spearheaded the initial Before Your Eyes concept for his college thesis.

He knew Graham‘s exceptional writing talents from high school productions and recruited him early. Their skill sets balanced perfectly for crafting a narrative-driven experience. As Graham recalls, "Will was always the game design guy and I was always the writing guy."

The full crew expanded to seven people over the 4+ year development marathon. Every member brought a unique flair, from Oliver‘s emotionally dynamic score to Bela‘s engineering wizardry honed from his solo-developed debut Little Bug.

This passion project was truly a labor of love, with the team staying committed despite over 200 failed prototype ideas. Their bold creative vision is what ultimately powered them through the finish line.

Under the Hood: Illuminating Game Development Insights

Having built my own business, I deeply respect the tremendous coordination it takes making games. I unpacked the hardest technical obstacles Bela‘s programming team faced designing Before Your Eyes‘ headset tracking features.

He explains, "So much of this ground wasn‘t covered, no one had ever used this." I ran a patent search finding under 100 similar filings to date, confirming how ahead of its time this project was!

The team researched optical hardware intensively before settling on infrared for reliable tracking across skin tones and lighting conditions. That alone solved only 30% of the challenges though. Smoothly integrating this input method with a Unity game engine still required custom middleware and months of adjustments.

As Graham added candidly, writers can‘t be primadonnas in game development. No matter how polished a scene may seem on paper, playtest reactions always dictate the final form. That commitment to iterative collaboration based on user feedback is a lesson every entrepreneur should learn.

Pioneering the Future of Interactive Storytelling

Before Your Eyes accurately senses even minute eye movements using webcam corneal reflection tracking. The psychologists I interviewed see ripe opportunities to apply similar technology for detecting emotions, focus and more.

Major players in this space include Apple (via Emotient acquisition) and Intel (RightEye tool). The global emotion detection software market also set to nearly double by 2024 to $36 billion. I‘m intrigued by all kinds of startups that could harness such capabilities for next-gen games, education, healthcare and beyond.

Of course, with any rapidly evolving new medium come risks like tech bias and ethical concerns around privacy breaches. As an optimist though, I see plenty of opportunities for small studios to carve out leadership spots if they move fast. The indie gaming landscape continues expanding exponentially in creative directions once unimaginable.

An Instant Indie Gaming Legend

Very few titles have enthralled me enough recently to binge straight through in one sitting – but Before Your Eyes grabbed hold tight right from the opening frames! Its balance of an accessible interactive narrative grounded by the blinking mechanic, complemented by full voice acting and a haunting soundtrack cements this as an instant indie classic.

Looking back, what earlier gems might have foreshadowed Before Your Eyes‘ brand of innovation though? Some argue THAT Dragon Cancer or Hellblade with their raw, personal stories. However, I would trace the game‘s spirit back to inventive adventure classics like Grim Fandango – if it mashed up with VR darling Paper Beast!

Despite astronomical expectations, the game still swept multiple Festival of Games awards and remains 98% positive on Steam…remarkable for a debut title from a small team! Releasing across multiple platforms was a savvy commercial move as well, allowing wider exposure especially on GamePass.

If this remarkably polished first effort is any indication, GoodbyeWorld Games looks firmly poised to ascend into gaming‘s premier storytelling studio ranks. I know I‘ll be following eagerly for whatever wonderfully odd ideas they craft next!
