Is hundo or shiny more rare in Pokémon GO?

In Pokémon GO, both hundo and shiny Pokémon are highly coveted for their rarity. But when it comes down to the numbers, hundo Pokémon with perfect IVs are significantly rarer finds than shinies.

What is a hundo?

A hundo, short for 100% IV, refers to a Pokémon with maxed out Individual Values – 15 in Attack, Defense, and Stamina. IVs determine a Pokémon‘s potential in battle. The higher the IVs, the stronger that Pokémon can become.

What is a shiny?

A shiny Pokémon has an alternate coloration from its normal form and a sparkling animation upon encounter. Shinies are purely cosmetic and do not affect battle performance. Their rarity comes from significantly lowered odds of encountering them.

Hundo Rates vs Shiny Rates

The base shiny rate in Pokémon GO is roughly 1 in 500. However, hundo rates can be as low as 1 in 4096! This table compares the odds:

Encounter Method Shiny Rate Hundo Rate
Wild 1 in 500 1 in 4096
Raid 1 in 20 1 in 216
Research 1 in 50 1 in 216
Egg 1 in 50 1 in 216
Lucky Trade Unaffected 1 in 64

As you can see, the base hundo rates are nearly 10 times rarer than shinies!

Why Are Hundos So Rare?

While shinies have a fixed increased rarity, hundos are dependent on RNG rolls on the 0-15 IV spectrum. 15/15/15 perfection is less likely. Additionally, raids provide an IV floor of 10/10/10 for legendaries, making them very elusive.

Hundo Hunting Tips

Here are some ways to increase your hundo odds:

  • Focus on Pokemon with weather boosts – this narrows the IV range
  • Only raid high IV legendaries (90%+)
  • Coordinate lucky trades for a 1 in 64 hundo chance
  • Do research tasks and hatch eggs for a 1 in 216 base rate
  • Use a Gotcha or Go Plus to quick-catch wild spawns in bulk

Shundo – The Rarest Combo

If you manage to encounter a shiny hundo, also known as a shundo, you‘ve hit the jackpot! With combined 1 in 4096 x 500 odds, a shundo is incredibly rare. Certain shundos like Meltan are near impossible finds.

Trading Re-Rolls 100% IVs

One thing to watch out for is trading away your hundos. The IV re-roll mechanic will randomize all IVs during a trade, meaning your perfect Pokémon is no longer guaranteed to stay 100%.

In summary, hundos take significantly more grinding and luck to obtain than shinies. With patience and the right techniques, every trainer will eventually catch a shiny. But very few have the dedication to build a grand collection of perfect IV Pokémon.
