Sekhret, known by Final Fantasy veterans as The Minotaur, is one of the earliest challenging Hunts players face in FF16. This towering beast with mythic origins can easily crush the unprepared, but with the right strategy, you‘ll send Sekhret back to the labyrinth he came from.
In this guide, I‘ll cover everything you need to know to take down Sekhret based on my experience with dozens of SoulsBorne bosses. Let‘s get into it!
Origin & Lore
Sekhret is modeled after the Minotaur of Greek legend – a ferocious half-man, half-bull that dwelled in the heart of the Labyrinth, feasting on sacrificial offerings.
As an iconic Final Fantasy enemy, Sekhret terrorized players in early games like Final Fantasy I. True to his roots, he plays the role of a dangerous early Hunt that serves as a DPS/gear check for unprepared players.
Given Clive‘s own bull-like aspects in his transformed state, perhaps an epic duel between man-bulls was inevitable!

Offensive Analysis
Sekhret isn‘t the largest boss you‘ll face, but he packs a wallop with his giant club attacks. Here‘s what you‘ll contend with:
Stomp Attack
- Sekhret rears up then slams his hooves down
- Causes area damage – keep distance!
- Easy to avoid by rolling away
Club Smash
- Single target attack
- Slow wind up – easy to dodge
- If blocked, consumes around 15% of max guard meter
Big Swing
- Sekhret winds up for 2 seconds then spins in circle with club extended
- Hit causes heavy stagger and damages guards massively
- Roll towards Sekhret then punish during cooldown
Raging Bull Rush
- Sekhret‘s ultimate attack
- Charges across arena swinging club wildly
- Very difficult to block – recommend dodging
- Leaves Sekhret exhausted for 6+ seconds after – wail on him!
While these attacks seem intimidating, proper timing and Rolls make them easy to avoid. Watch for attack wind-ups and don‘t get greedy!
Recommended Gear
I suggest equipping accessories and armor that provide:
- High physical damage reduction
- Increased guard meter fortification
- Bonuses to slash/strike damage types
Shields can also help mitigate damage from blocked attacks.
For weapons, greatswords, hammers, and axes excel at breaking Sekhret‘s guard meter quickly, creating wider attack windows.
Here are some optional items to consider bringing:
- Phoenix Downs – Revive KO‘d allies quickly
- Ethers – Restore MP for emergency heals
- Whetstones – Repair weapon damage mid-fight
Battle Strategy
Here is the strategy that I‘ve used to defeat Sekhret consistently:
1. Bait Short Range Attacks
Early on, strafe just outside his club range to bait stomps and club attacks. They are very telegraphed, making punishing easy.
2. Avoid Charges and Spins
When Sekhret enters a spin or charge, immediately disengage. Don‘t even try blocking these! Just stay calm, roll through them, then resume attacking as he recovers.
3. Manage Your Stamina
Don‘t blow all your stamina wailing on Sekhret. Always leave enough to roll 3+ times just in case he unleashes another charge. Stamina = survival!
4. Bring The Pain At Openings
After baited attacks or long spin/charge recoveries, let loose with your hardest-hitting abilities. These openings are the time to drain his health bar!
5. Repeat The Formula
Rinse and repeat above steps. With patience and discipline, Sekhret will fall!
Closing Thoughts
The key with Sekhret is having a balanced offense/defense. Dodge his heaviest blows, block/punish his slower attacks, then make your windows of attack count!
While he hits hard, Sekhret‘s attack patterns are predictable compared to faster hunts like Garuda. Treat this as a lesson in mid-fight endurance.
Now get out there, claim those rewards, and craft yourself a wicked Gaia Blade! Just mind the horns…
