And you need multiples of many items for quests. For example, Remy‘s Ratatouille recipe required me to stockpile 81 tomatoes and 27 carrots! Running out of space makes completing quests way tougher.
By upgrading your storage capacity early on, you avoid headaches like:
- Constantly selling items just to clear space
- Not having materials needed to finish quests
- Missing opportunities to cook meals or craft items
- Having a home interior that looks sad and empty

Completing key quests for Scrooge McDuck allows you to upgrade your home. Here are the levels with their slot increases and costs:

So what quests do you need to finish?
The key is completing Scrooge McDuck’s quests to re-open his store. These include:
- Making Cents of Things – Gather and sell items to earn 1,000 star coins
- Scrooge McDuck’s Grand Re-opening – Fulfill requests to attract customers
- Dreamlight Valley Economy 101 – Find gems and sell to Goofy
Once you complete those three, Scrooge gives you the Medium and Large upgrade options through the elevator menu.
Then outside the house, interacting with his sign lets you pay to add full rows of chest slots.
I cannot stress enough how vital these house upgrades are for early game storage expansion! It makes such a difference in what items you can accumulate.
Crafting Additional Chests
While house upgrades are huge, you shouldn‘t stop there for storage solutions. I learned first-hand that crafting extra chests to scatter around my home proved extremely useful.
Gathering the materials is no problem at all:
- 25 Softwood – Chop down trees
- 25 Stone – Smash boulders
With those, head to a crafting table. Under Functional Items you‘ll see the chest recipe open up.
Every chest you craft gives 16 more item slots, so I made enough to fill each room, designating certain chests for certain items.
For example, I have dedicated chests just for gems, seafood, vegetables, and one for cute furniture items. This lets me stay organized instead of just throwing everything randomly into upgraded house chests.
Pro Crafting Tip: You can place chests outside too! I lined some up out front to store excess crafting materials and seeds.
