From set dressing to dialogue systems, environmental storytelling immerses you in a singular vision of our high-tech future. But clunky mechanics constantly threaten to break the spell. It seems CD Projekt Red‘s eyes were bigger than their QA team‘s stomach – a common entrepreneurial mistake.

Despite its stumbles, Cyberpunk 2077 succeeds at bringing the evocative visuals and societal warnings of the cyberpunk genre to a modern AAA video game format. Exploring a realized future city full of transhumanist themes and technologically-induced violence remains compelling despite frequent immersion breaking moments. Fans willing to push through repetitious missions will find some of gaming‘s most satisfying player-driven storytelling.
