SETI Research Progressing Exponentially

 SETI
In a recent TED presentation, SETI researcher Seth Shostak describes how advances in astronomy and technology have now put the search for extraterrestrial intelligence on an exponential curve.
D r. Seth Shostak participates in the Search for ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence at the SETI Institute. He heads up the International Academy of Astronautics' SETI Committee, and hosts a weekly radio show, "Big Picture Science".

Shostak has published more than 400 popular articles on science, and his most recent book is Confessions of an Alien Hunter: A Scientist's Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence. He is also an accomplished photographer. His photos have been featured on the cover of Time magazine.

In the presentation below, Shostak describes how advances in astronomy and technology have now put the search for extraterrestrial intelligence on an exponential curve.

"This is an exponential increase in speed," Shostak said. "And it covers much more of the radio dial, which is important because ET never told us where to look for his broadcasts."

The Story of the Chessboard

The classic parable of how the inventor of the game of chess used his knowledge of exponential growth to trick an emperor is commonly used to explain the staggering and accelerating growth of technology. The 33rd square on the chessboards represents the first step into the second half of the chessboard, where exponential growth takes off.

33rd Square explores technological progress in AI, robotics, genomics, neuroscience, nanotechnology, art, design and the future as humanity encroaches on The Singularity.
