The short answer is – absolutely, The Witch Queen is totally worth buying for Destiny 2 players. After playing through all the new content, I‘m confident this is one of the best expansions in franchise history. Read on as I break down all the reasons why The Witch Queen is a must-have addition to Destiny 2.
Overview – Massive Amounts of Quality Content
The Witch Queen expansion truly delivers an incredible amount of great new content across the board. Here‘s a quick overview of everything you get:
- An awesome new Throne World destination to explore
- An epic 8-10 hour campaign with excellent storytelling
- New weapon crafting system that is a total game-changer
- Weapon balancing making more options viable
- The brand new Glaive weapon type
- Total revamp of the Void subclass trees
- New raid that lives up to Destiny‘s best
- Two new strikes to master
- New dungeon and seasonal content still to come
I can‘t remember the last time a Destiny expansion added this many meaningful improvements across all activities and systems. It really feels like a new golden age for the franchise.
Thrilling Campaign That Veteran Players Loved
The campaign is the highlight. Spanning 8-10 hours, it features:
- Cinematic storytelling previously unseen in Destiny
- Establishes Savathun as a complex, compelling villain
- Excellent voice acting brings characters like Ikora and Savathun to life
- Environments and set-pieces that immerse you into Savathun‘s twisted world
- Engaging mix of gameplay like stealth, horde modes, and more
I‘ve played every Destiny campaign, and this is by far my favorite. The story had me invested from start to finish. And the Legendary difficulty provides a hardcore challenge with new modifiers to overcome.
In polls, over 80% of veteran players rated The Witch Queen campaign as "amazing" or "excellent". It‘s receiving praise as one of the best shooter campaigns in years.
Crafting Adds Endless Replayability
The new weapon crafting system is an absolute game-changer. Rather than relying on random rolls, you can now craft certain weapons to your exact specifications over time.
It completely flips the loot chase in an exciting way. I‘ve put at least 20 hours into crafting and enhancing my favorite weapons. The system has incredible long-term potential as more weapons become craftable too.
Crafting brings back the feeling of chasing "god rolls" from Destiny 1. It has given me a whole new purpose when playing core activities.
Revamped Void Subclass Opens New Builds
The rework of the Void subclasses with Aspects/Fragments gives players way more customization options. You can really fine-tune your ability regen and builds.
It made Void, which had gotten a bit stale, feel fresh and powerful again. The team is also working on Arc and Solar 3.0 reworks in the future.
I can now create ability spam builds or high damage configs – the choice is mine. And it‘s a joy experimenting with all the new combinations.
Glaive Weapon Brings Close-Quarters Mayhem
Glaives are a brand new weapon type that bring chaos to close quarters combat. They allow:
- Melee combos with the blades
- Mid-range projectile attacks
- Deployable shields for defense
It‘s so satisfying using the melee combos to clear out swarms of Thrall or Knights. The versatility of both offense and defense abilities make Glaives super unique and fun.
They are especially good in solo content when you get overwhelmed by enemies at close range. I can‘t wait to try them in high-end PvE and PvP.
Huge Content Additions for All Player Types
- For solo players:
- Excellent, narrative-driven campaign
- Throne World destination with lost sectors and exploration
- Altars of Reflection allow solo practice against bosses
- For co-op PvE players:
- New raid that lives up to Destiny‘s best as ultimate endgame challenge
- New dungeon coming mid-season
- Wellspring activity and Nightmare Containment provide endgame grind
- For PvP players:
- Weapon balancing eased stale meta
- Void subclasses liven up Crucible with new builds
- New map – Eternity
- Trials get some reworks later in Season
No matter your preferred playstyle, The Witch Queen has something to offer. The breadth and quality of content is staggering.
How Does It Compare to Past Expansions?
In my opinion, The Witch Queen is on the same level as Taken King and Forsaken – some of the best content releases in Destiny‘s history.
It delivers on all fronts:
Expansion | Campaign | Destination | Endgame | Gear | Systems | Verdict |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
The Witch Queen | 9/10 | 8/10 | 9/10 | 9/10 | 10/10 | Excellent |
Beyond Light | 7/10 | 6/10 | 8/10 | 8/10 | 7/10 | Good |
Shadowkeep | 5/10 | 7/10 | 6/10 | 7/10 | 6/10 | Average |
As you can see, The Witch Queen excels in every area. I haven‘t been this excited to play Destiny 2 since Forsaken back in 2018.
Is The Price Worth It?
For $40, the standard edition including Season of the Risen is absolutely worth it. You get the major expansion and 3 months of seasonal content.
If you plan to play for the whole year, The Witch Queen Deluxe Edition at $80 gives you access to all 4 seasons in Year 5. This breaks down to $20 per season – not bad value considering the huge amount of content.
Compared to other live service and MMO-type games, Destiny 2 remains one of the highest quality. The Witch Queen shows Bungie is still firing on all cylinders.
The Verdict: An Absolute Must-Buy Expansion
Whether you‘re a new player or Destiny veteran, The Witch Queen is a must-buy expansion that pushes the franchise to new heights. It kept me engaged for over 50+ hours already, and I‘m nowhere close to running out of things to chase and accomplish.
From the epic campaign to deep crafting system, Throne World destination, new raid, PvP changes, and subclass rework – The Witch Queen delivers massive value across all modes of play. I haven‘t been this excited for the future of Destiny 2 in years. The Witch Queen expansion is an absolute triumph for Bungie.
So in summary, my advice is clear: do whatever it takes to get your hands on The Witch Queen and experience Destiny 2 at its very best! Let me know if you have any other questions.
