A window screen can weather, tear and break due to age and exposure to outdoor elements like wind and rain. If you plan to remove or replace a window screen in your home, you must determine if it is an interior or an exterior screen.

An interior window screen is installed in the grooves of the millwork around the window and uses tension to stay in place. An exterior screen is secured with a plunger-pin system and hangs on the outside of a window. Both types of screens can be removed from inside the house

Replacing your Interior Screen

Slide the window screen open. Locate the finger lifts, also known as lift tabs, at the bottom of the window screen. The lift tabs are usually made of metal or plastic. Pull up on the lift tabs with your index and middle fingers until you feel the screen lift slightly. Apply pressure with your fingers, forcing the tension-spring mounts at the top of the screen to compress.

Keep your fingers on your left hand on the lift tab and grab the bottom of the screen with your right hand. Lift the bottom of the screen out of the groove in the millwork.

Replacing your Interior Screen

Hold the screen with both hands and pull it out of the window toward you. Slide the bottom of the screen through the opening first, and the rest of the screen will follow. You may need to tap the screen to one side or pull it through the window.

Replacing your Exterior Screen

Remove the window sash if you have a modern double-hung window, it is easy to detach the sash. You just have to find the plunger pins on the inside of the window screen, usually located near the bottom. Pull the plunger pins inward toward the center of the window to release the screen.

Replacing your Exterior Screen

A window screen can be tricky to remove because it matches the dimensions of the window and is fixed within small holes, not easy to access. You need to be extra careful and not force it too much to detach the screen from the window frame.

Step 1

Hold the window screen frame tightly and carefully push the whole screen outwards. Try to isolate the screen from the window and pull down slightly.

Step 2

At this point, you need to ensure no one is standing under the window in case you accidentally drop the window screen. Do not lean out the window, and keep your feet firmly on the ground.

Step 3

Slightly tilt the screen at an angle, so you can fit it through the window opening. Pull the screen toward you, and bend it slightly. The frame around a window screen is reliable, but it's somewhat flexible, so you might need to turn it a little to pull it through the window.

Step 4

You need to examine the window and remove the small, plastic removable tab that holds the window in place, known as the screen clips. This is usually found on windows with two half screens.

Step 5

Look for any visible pins or springs on the window screen. You might find finger lifts in some windows, and some other pins hook. Try and push the finger lifts or pins to lift or adjust the screen. If you see any hooks or springs, press on them with your fingers and see if the screen shift on its own. This action alone may allow you to remove the screen in some cases.

Step 6

Gently press on each side of the screen until you notice a springlike action coming from the top, bottom, or one of the sides. If one side of your screen has pull tabs, your springs are likely on the opposing side.

Step 7

Push on the spring side to stretch the screen inward, freeing it from its grip. If you have a small finger, you might be able to wedge your fingers between the window and the screen and gently avoid getting hurt.

Step 8

When you have contracted the screen as much as you can without forcing it, slowly push it outward to remove it from the hold altogether. If you have a pull tab, use it for leverage, but do not force it, as these tabs can easily break.

With these steps, you can easily remove your house window screen without any professional training.
