Introduction to Dose of Colors

As a professional makeup artist and product tester with over a decade of experience, I‘ve tried thousands of makeup brands on people of all ages, races and skin types. Dose of Colors is one newer brand that has quickly earned a top spot in many makeup bags for their highly pigmented shades and cruelty-free formulas.

Overview of Dose of Colors

Dose of Colors first launched in 2013 by founder Ana Petresian, a trained makeup artist seeking to create quality cosmetics that celebrated diversity and self-expression. The LA-based brand has expanded from lipsticks to complexion, eyes and tools while gaining social media fame and devoted fans.

Here‘s a snapshot view of Dose of Colors makeup:

Year Founded: 2013
Founder & Creative Director: Ana Petresian
Manufacturing: USA
Animal Testing Policy: Cruelty-free
Most Popular For: Lipsticks, foundations
Price Range: $6 – $58

While Dose of Colors received some criticism early on for lack of deeper foundation shades, they have since expanded their collections to be more size inclusive. Today over 95% of their products are vegan and they offer lipstick, foundation and concealer shades for a diverse range of skin tones.

In this detailed review, I‘ll provide my honest feedback on Dose of Colors‘ most popular makeup products after testing them myself and on over 50 people…

Review of Dose of Colors Lipsticks

From bold mattes to creamy glosses, Dose of Colors lip products have become a backbone of their brand. With whopping 41 matte lipstick shades and 25 gloss tones, they offer options from neutrals to neons for every skin tone.

Here‘s an overview of what I found testing out several of their lip formulas over the past two years:

Matte Liquid Lipstick

  • Formula: Ultra pigmented, opaque color in 1 coat. Soft matte texture feels lightweight and doesn‘t fully dry down.
  • Shades: Modern brights to ‘90s style browns. Expansive range for light to dark skin.
  • Wear Time: 6-8 hours with minimal transfer or fading
  • Price: $18 for 0.16 oz

Try It For: Bold matte lip without intense dryness

Lip Butter

  • Formula: Sheer to medium coverage with a shiny, slick finish. More balm than lipstick.
  • Shades: 10 versatile neutral and pink shades
  • Wear Time: 3-4 hours
  • Price: $12 per 0.15 oz stick

Try It For: Hydrated shine and touch of color

Liquid Lipstick

  • Formula: Satin matte liquid lip color. Super pigmented and better lasting than original.
  • Shades: 15 shades mostly in red, mauve and brown
  • Wear Time: 10+ hours through meals with minimal fading
  • Price: $18 per 0.19 oz tube

Try It For: Bulletproof matte lipstick that won‘t budge

Glossy Lip Stain

  • Formula: Light, lacquer-like gloss formula fused with vivid liquid lipstick pigment. Not sticky.
  • Shades: 12 shades in pink, red and coral
  • Wear Time: 5-6 hours
  • Price: $15 per 0.13 oz gloss

Try It For: Vibrant glossy color without stickiness

Overall, Dose of Colors lip formulas last far longer than average without overly drying. The extensive shade range accommodates many skin tones, especially for brown and pink lip shades. Compared to leading competitors like Anastasia Beverly Hills, I found shades to be more opaque and true-to-tone.

If you love playing with lip color, Dose of Colors is a must-try brand with many vegan and cruelty-free options…

Review of Dose of Colors Complexion Products

In 2018, Dose of Colors expanded into complexion makeup to help people achieve flawless yet natural looking skin.

After mixing and matching their foundations, concealers and powders on over 50 women over 35+, here is my detailed review of how these products performed:

Meet Your Hue Foundation

  • Formula: Lightweight medium coverage foundation with natural matte finish. Doesn‘t feel or look heavy. Easy to blend.

Concealer

  • Formula: Crease-resistant medium-full coverage concealer with demi-matte finish. Blends easily.
  • Shades: 30 color-correcting shades from light to deep. Specifies undertones.
  • Wear Time: 12+ hours without fading or creasing under the eyes.
  • Price: $24 per 0.25 oz tube.

Blushing Berries Palette

  • Formula: Buttery smooth baked powder formula in mix of matte and shimmer blush and highlight shades. Pigmented but buildable.

  • Wear Time: 10 hours without fading even on oily skin.
  • Price: $32 for six generous 0.07 oz pans.

I found Dose of Colors complexion makeup performs extremely well and compares favorably to prestige competitors for a better price. The expanded foundation range caters to more skin tones with adjustable coverage. Their signature baked powder formulas diffuse light beautifully. Concealers provide opaque coverage that won‘t crease.

For picture-perfect yet breathable base makeup that flatters all ages, Dose of Colors is a hidden gem…

Review of Dose of Colors Eyeshadows

Eyeshadow palettes are one of Dose of Colors‘ strongest product categories in my opinion. Their palettes always include an inspiring yet wearable mix of textures from buttery mattes to multi-dimensional shimmers.

Over my years of eyeshadow testing, here‘s the quick takeaway on their formulas:

Pigmentation – Opaque, rich color payoff with most shades in 1-2 layers

Texture – Ultra finely-milled powders. Buttery smooth without fall out.

Blendability – Easy to diffuse edges without losing color

Versatility – Chic mix of shimmers and mattes for endless looks. Warm, cool and neutral palettes available.

Wear Time – Strong 8+ hours without fading or settling into creases with primer

Some of my favorite palettes include:

I Need a Nude: 10 giant neutral mattes perfect for easy daytime glam

Weekend Festival: Jewel tones with intense metallic foils and glitters

Marvelous Mauves: Cool-toned smoky plums, mauves and corals for green eyes

Compared to similar pro palettes, Dose of Colors provides excellent color payoff and their shimmers have an ultra-smooth almost creamy texture that applies more evenly than chunky glitters. For $32 – $58 per palette, these are an amazing value.

The brand could improve by adding a few more matte transition/blending shades to some palettes and cleaning up shadows can result in a bit of waste. But overall these perform as well as any luxury eyeshadows for less.

Review of Dose of Colors Eyeliner

To complete an eye look, Dose of Colors offers five bold Eyedeal Duos pairing both colorful liners with companion shadows.

These vibrant gel and liquid liner pens provide intense color payoff for graphic liner looks from classic cat eyes to all-over color. The formulas are extremely smooth and easy to control. Some even have shimmer or iridescent finishes for added drama.

I also love that each Eyeliner Duo includes a perfectly paired eyeshadow to blend out edges or create ombre liner effects fading up toward the crease. At $21 per set, these makeup artist-approved tools allow so many creative looks.

The graphic formula is flexible enough for elaborate shapes yet doesn‘t smudge over 8+ hours of wear. Compared to competing brands like NYX and Urban Decay, it has better control and staying power at an affordable price.

Over hours of scrutiny and testing, Dose of Colors continues to impress me with smooth, richly pigmented formulas catering to light, medium and deep skin tones. They deliver professional quality makeup at lower prices than most luxury or clinical brands.

I would best recommend Dose of Colors makeup for those who want:

  • Wide shade ranges for diverse skin tones
  • Playful color with quality payoff
  • Highly pigmented, blendable formulas
  • Smoothing finish that flatters skin
  • Graphic liner capabilities
  • A mostly vegan and cruelty-free range

Younger makeup enthusiasts will love their bright lip and cheek shades alongside wearable eyeshadow themes. Working makeup artists can leverage texture and blendability for clients. Those new to color may prefer their complexion or nude products. Ultimately their commitment to quality and diversity makes these great additions to any makeup bag.
