Speed and Performance
I ran speed tests on AdGuard VPN‘s free and premium servers in North America, Europe, and Asia. Here are the average results compared to my base connection speed of 100 Mbps:

On the free servers, my speeds were capped at around 20 Mbps down and 10 Mbps up. That‘s enough for general web browsing and standard definition video, but not much else. Upgrading to the premium servers removed those speed limits.
However, my overall speeds on AdGuard VPN still couldn‘t match top competitors like NordVPN. On a similar 100 Mbps connection, NordVPN‘s NordLynx protocol has reached speeds over 90 Mbps even on distant servers.
One bright spot was AdGuard VPN‘s performance with local servers. When connected to the premium US server closest to me, I averaged a very respectable 82 Mbps down and 25 Mbps up. Gamers will also appreciate the low ping under 40ms.
Streaming and Torrenting
Many VPN users are looking to access geo-blocked streaming content or torrent privately. So I tested AdGuard VPN‘s ability to unblock popular streaming platforms and hide torrenting traffic.
The good news is AdGuard VPN‘s free US servers worked flawlessly with Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max, and Amazon Prime Video. Even though speeds were limited to 20 Mbps, I had no buffering issues at 1080p resolution.

It‘s a solid choice for anonymous torrenting thanks to its secure VPN protocol and strict no-logs policy (more on that below). The 5 device limit is a bit restrictive for torrenters with many devices. But speeds were good enough to max out my 25 Mbps upload connection on nearby P2P servers.
Security and Privacy
VPN Protocols
AdGuard VPN uses a proprietary protocol based on HTTP over TLS (HoTS). According to AdGuard‘s blog post introducing the protocol:
"HOTS does not require installing additional software and is simple in its structure, which makes it much faster than its counterparts. HOTS can easily disguise itself as normal encrypted HTTPS traffic…making it virtually undetectable for network administrators."
In essence, AdGuard‘s protocol aims to maximize speed and compatibility while still effectively masking VPN traffic. That‘s a commendable goal in the era of VPN blocking and deep packet inspection.
However, I would have liked to see AdGuard implement WireGuard as an additional protocol choice. WireGuard is open-source, audited, and rapidly being adopted by leading VPN providers for its speed and security benefits. Lack of WireGuard support is a mark against AdGuard VPN for tech-savvy users.
Encryption and Security Features
AdGuard VPN secures your data with military-grade AES-256 encryption. That‘s the same cipher used by banks and government agencies to protect classified info. Even with a supercomputer, cracking AES-256 would take billions of years.
All AdGuard VPN apps include a kill switch that prevents data leaks by blocking internet access if the VPN disconnects. I tested this feature multiple times and never experienced any DNS or IP address leaks.
AdGuard VPN also comes with built-in protection against DNS leaks and WebRTC leaks. But iOS users should be aware that AdGuard VPN doesn‘t have an option to turn off IPv6 traffic. When I connected to AdGuard VPN on my iPhone, I noticed my real IPv6 address was still visible. This is a potential concern if you need maximum anonymity.
Ad and Malware Blocking
One of AdGuard VPN‘s most interesting features is the ability to block ads, trackers, and malicious domains using DNS filtering. In the AdGuard VPN app settings, you can easily enable various filters to block:

While a nice bonus, I wouldn‘t rely on AdGuard VPN‘s DNS filtering as your only layer of protection against ads and online threats. For maximum security, pair it with a reputable antivirus program and dedicated tracker blocker.

AdGuard VPN operates under the jurisdiction of Cyprus, which is not part of the 5/9/14-Eyes Alliance. The company claims to adhere to a strict no-logging policy, stating in its privacy policy:
"We do not collect, store, or log any data that can be tied to you as a person in any way. The only information we have is the information you provide us when you pay for your subscription."
Regarding payment info, AdGuard VPN gives you the option to pay anonymously using Bitcoin or cash at 100,000+ retail locations worldwide.
I was glad to see that AdGuard VPN has completed an independent security audit by Cure53. The audit, conducted in 2021, included analysis of AdGuard VPN‘s infrastructure, apps, browser extensions, and public websites. You can view the full audit report here.
However, I would like to see AdGuard VPN take the next step and conduct a no-logs audit as many top VPN providers have done. Audits from reputable firms like PwC and Deloitte have become the gold standard for validating no-logging claims.

The knowledge base includes setup guides for all supported platforms as well as troubleshooting articles. I found the guides to be clearly written with helpful screenshots.
To gauge the speed and quality of support, I submitted multiple queries to AdGuard VPN‘s email support. I received helpful responses to most of my questions within 4-5 hours. However, one of my more technical questions about IPv6 leak protection went unanswered.
While 24/7 email support is adequate, I‘d like to see AdGuard VPN add live chat to its website for even faster assistance. Competitors like Surfshark and NordVPN offer 24/7 live chat with knowledgeable, responsive agents.

Finally, let‘s see how AdGuard VPN measures up against two of the most popular VPNs on the market, NordVPN and Surfshark:

As you can see, while AdGuard VPN holds its own in some areas, it falls short of NordVPN and Surfshark in overall value. NordVPN offers more server locations, better streaming support, and WireGuard for less than AdGuard VPN‘s 2-year plan price. Surfshark beats them both on price and allows unlimited devices.
Bottom Line
So, is AdGuard VPN worth using in 2024? Here‘s my take:
AdGuard VPN‘s free plan is a decent option if you only need a limited amount of VPN data for basic web browsing and streaming. The free US servers reliably unblock Netflix and other popular streaming sites. And the free plan‘s built-in ad blocking is a nice perk.
However, the stingy 3GB monthly data limit severely restricts the free plan‘s utility. If you want a free VPN for daily use, I recommend ProtonVPN‘s free plan instead, which offers unlimited data on a few server locations.
As for AdGuard VPN‘s paid plans, it‘s a tougher sell. The premium servers provide good speeds and unblocking performance. And I appreciate the added privacy of AdGuard‘s proprietary protocol. But the relatively high price and lack of WireGuard support make it hard to justify choosing AdGuard VPN over more established providers.
If you want the best security and streaming experience in the premium VPN market, I suggest going with NordVPN. For maximum value and unlimited devices, Surfshark is my top budget pick. But if you‘re already a satisfied AdGuard customer, bundling the VPN with AdGuard‘s other privacy and security tools may make sense.
