Dr. Randal Koene Talks Whole Brain Emulation

 Mind Uploading
Computational neuroscientist Randal Koene at a recent TED talk discussed how humans are increasingly augmenting ourselves, and that soon this will include augmenting and backing up  our brains.
Dr. Randal A. Koene is computational neuroscientist and co-founder of carboncopies.org network. Carboncopies.org is a nonprofit organisation with a goal of advancing and creating Substrate-Independent Minds (SIM).

SIM is a field of research which seeks to understand the brain and nervous system of a wide range of organisms, including humans, in order to facilitate emulation of these organisms in an artificial substrate, namely a computer.

Koene published two articles earlier this year in the Special Issue on Mind Uploading (Vol. 4, issue 1, June 2012) of the International Journal of Machine Consciousness.

Koene's research is centered on how to decode and simulate brain processes on computers and to find out, if and how could we possibly transfer mind to a non-biological substrate that is needed in patient-specific neuroprostheses. He is also working on the feasibility and roadmap to whole brain emulation.

The Story of the Chessboard

The classic parable of how the inventor of the game of chess used his knowledge of exponential growth to trick an emperor is commonly used to explain the staggering and accelerating growth of technology. The 33rd square on the chessboards represents the first step into the second half of the chessboard, where exponential growth takes off.

33rd Square explores technological progress in AI, robotics, genomics, neuroscience, nanotechnology, art, design and the future as humanity encroaches on The Singularity.
