IEEE Spectrum recently took a tour of iRobot's museum, featuring prototype robots and research projects. The video shot on the tour features a historical look at the company started by Rodney Brooks and a potential glimpse at the future.
Recently, IEEE Spectrum got a tour of the iRobot facilities in Massachusetts. iRobot is the manufacturer of the popular Roomba Vacuuming Robot as well as other robotic systems, including the military Packbot robots.

Recording 25 awesome minutes of Nancy Dussault Smith, vice president of marketing communications at iRobot, giving the company's tour, which included the corporate museum. The video included below shows artifacts ranging from Colin Angle's first robot all the way to experimental projects that never made it into production.

Robot fans will certainly recognize a lot of these projects, and beyond the actual robots themselves, you'll also recognize how iRobot's experiments have influenced all sorts of subsequent projects in the realms of both research and industry.

The Story of the Chessboard

The classic parable of how the inventor of the game of chess used his knowledge of exponential growth to trick an emperor is commonly used to explain the staggering and accelerating growth of technology. The 33rd square on the chessboards represents the first step into the second half of the chessboard, where exponential growth takes off.

33rd Square explores technological progress in AI, robotics, genomics, neuroscience, nanotechnology, art, design and the future as humanity encroaches on The Singularity.
